Vitrified tiles are made by combining clay and silica in a process called vitrification. The process of manufacture makes them extremely hard and non-porous which is a great advantage over natural stones like marble which are porous and hence need a good deal of care.
Vitrified tiles are virtually maintenance free and have very good abrasion resistance – which makes them very suitable for use in high traffic areas.
What we call hydraulic ceramic tiles were once called encaustic tiles in the Victorian era and originally called inlaid tiles during the medieval period.
By that time, the surface was not glazed but finished with different colors of clay. Basilico matt inspired in those times with the latest modern
technology to extend this old trend in a new one, reviving the old days in new wonderful environments.
